Click and drag measure of preference

Built with Task Builder 2

This is a novel preference measure, designed for a study comparing preference for different biomes. Biomes are types of outside spaces, categorized by their content. Green biome is dominated by vegetation, Blue biome is dominated by a body of water, Green & Blue biome combines elements characteristic elements of the two; Brown biome, in this study, is also dominated by vegetation but made distinct by dormancy of life in the landscape, in other words leafless, autumn/winter landscapes. Gray biome is dominated by human-made constructions.

In the task, participants are presented with 5 photographs one at the time, representing each biome. This is followed by a rating screen where participants can see miniatures of just presented photographs on the left hand side and asked to click and drag them onto the gray area on the right side of the screen putting more preferred images higher up, and less preferred images lower down. The gray area is composed of 14 dropzones each corresponding to descending numerical response. This design captures nuances of preference expressed by uneven distances between the images and allows for ex aequo responses, making it more sensitive instrument that preexisting measures of preference such as ranked order or Likert scale.

The task can be modified into any other measure of preference for visual stimuli, repeated measures design is recommended to reduce error noise from individual stimuli.
