Comforting behaviours: the power of social touch

Description

To touch or to talk: trust and empathy

Built with Experiment

The study explores how people perceive and respond to emotional distress and comforting behaviors through an observational task involving comic-style images of social interactions.

Participants are shown scenes featuring two female characters, described as roommates. One character expresses sadness, and the other provides comfort through either reassuring words or social touch.

Participants then provide self-reported evaluations of the observed interaction, including their perceptions of its realism, appropriateness, and pleasantness. Additionally, participants’ individual propensities to trust others and their levels of empathy are measured.
