The Great Ape Dicionary - Human Edition

An online experiment based on Graham & Hobaiter 2023 that tests (i) whether human participants would infer the same meanings that are attested in chimpanzees for chimpanzee gestures performed by a human gesturer; and (ii) whether human participants would infer gestures' meanings that derive from the chimpanzee meanings by virtue of a conduit metaphor. Participants watch videos of a human actor performing chimpanzee gestures and are asked to assign the correct meaning and how confident they are in their response. Half of participants are presented with literal meanings and half with non-literal meanings.
