Salford Nature Environments Database

The task and materials included here were used in the development of a database of landscape images for use in cognitive restoration research.

A copy of the database with outcomes can be accessed from GitHub: https://github.com/Salford-PsyTech/Salford_Nature_Environments_Database

Further information on the data collection, processing, and analysis, can be found on the project OSF page: https://osf.io/sbqg8

Image presentation - set 1

Built with Task Builder 2

Image presentation task.

Each version of the rating task includes 100 images from the database.

Each image was assigned pseudo-randomly to a set between 1 and 5, and one between 6 and 10. Images are therefore presented alongside different images in the different sets, whilst allowing for equal numbers of ratings to be collected for all images.

Presentation of the images is managed by a script that prevents images from the same category being presented more than 3 times in a row (though this can be altered in the spreadsheet randomisation settings).

Each image is presented on screen for 3 seconds, before 8 ratings are collected, using sliders, over 2 displays. Participants must interact with the ratings and select a continue button on these displays, in order to progress.

Participants provide ratings, on a scale of 1-9, for each image on; arousal, valence, approach/avoid, pleasantness, familiarity, mystery, interest, and prospect/refuge.

Design of this task was based on:

Perceived rurality-urbanity V2 (split leisure questions)

Built with Questionnaire Builder 2

This questionnaire asks participants to respond on a scale of 1-10, where 1 indicates a rural setting, and 10 indicates an urban setting;

  • Where they live.
  • What is their current location.
  • Where they spend most of their time.

Participants also indicate how much they like to spend their time in urban and rural environments.

The questionnaire was adapted from: Cox, D. T. C., Shanahan, D. F., Hudson, H. L., Fuller, R. A., & Gaston, K. J. (2018). The impact of urbanisation on nature dose and the implications for human health. Landscape and Urban Planning, 179, 72–80. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.landurbplan.2018.07.013
