SNARC effect & Finger-counting routines

Here we share all the materials from the following study:

Hohol, M., Wołoszyn, K., & Cipora, K. (2022). No fingers, no SNARC? Spatial-Numerical Associations and temporal stability of finger counting. Acta Psychologica, 230, 103765. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.actpsy.2022.103765

The procedure consists of: 1) Classic parity judgment task with single-digit Arabic numbers (Dehaene et al., 1993); 2) Finger counting routines questionnaire (Hohol et al., 2018); 3) Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (Oldfield, 1971).

In a nutshell, the procedure allows researchers to replicate the SNARC, explore the difference in the SNARC effect between left- and right-starters (regarding finger counting direction), and explore the relationship between the self-reported temporal stability of the finger counting starting hand and the SNARC effect. Approximate time of performing the procedure with a single participant: 25 min.

Note that all the instructions and materials are in Polish. If you wish to replicate our study or use our materials to perform follow-up or other study with English-speaking participants, please contact the corresponding authors (mateusz.hoholuj.edu.pl; k.ciporalboro.ac.uk). Will be pleased to assist you in translating the whole procedure into English. Our finger counting routines questionnaire (Hohol et al., 2018) is already available in English at https://osf.io/tg98s/
