Word learning task used for Experiment 2 for Higham et al. (2023), Spaced Retrieval Practice: Can Restudying Trump Retrieval? (doi: https://doi.org/10.1007/s10648-023-09809-2)
Experiment Overview
Language learning experiment that lets participants learn 40 Swahili-English word pairs. Participants can initially study the word pairs and then practice them over the course of 3 learning practice sessions (completed 2 days apart). Conditions follow a 2x2 design. In each practice session, participants are able to practice each word twice. A word was practiced in one of the following practice type:
Additionally, for half the words in each condition participants were asked to provide an accuracy rating for their guess while in the other half this part was omitted.
Participants completed a final test another two days later in which they were asked to type in the correct Swahili translation for every English word. Once again, they were shown the correct word pair afterwards.
