This set of tasks are part of an experiment which aims to compare the effects of volitional to instructed screenshotting on subsequent memory. This expriment contains two blocks of stimuli; one block of 20 informative stimuli (containing linguistic targets) and a block of 20 aesthetic stimuli (containing visual targets). Part One consists of encoding trials where participants will have the opportunity to screenshot an image either voluntarily or due to instructions depending on group allocation. Participants will also be asked to rate images on their memorability. Part Two consists of a memory test for the stimuli presented in the first part.

Instructions page and practice task for the Instructed screenshotting group: For the practice task, participant will be told to screenshot one of two images and rate them on a memorability scale. In the instructed group practice trials: the image that will be screenshot is fixed to the second image. To screenshot an image, the participant must press on the 'CAMERA.png' button in bottom left corner. If a participant fails to press the screenshot button on practice trials: gorilla script will direct participants to restart practice trials. Stimuli in these practice trials contain one stimulus example of the informative stimuli block (containing linguistic targets) and one stimulus example of the aesthetic stimuli block (containing visual targets). Once both practice stimuli have been viewed for 20 seconds and rated on memorability, participants will be directed to 'review' screen where the screenshotted image is shown. Once a participant is ready, they will complete a practice test. Both images will be shown with something blocked out from them. Participants will be required to select one of three possible answers in 20 seconds. Once complete, participants will be shown their scoreboard before preparing to commence the real experiment following a 10 second countdown.
*Please note: * As in the instructed group the screenshot instruction is fixed to the second image, participants will automatically review the second image. Participants will only be instructed to screenshot one image in the practice trial.

Part Two consists of a memory test for all 40 stimuli presented in Part One. The order in which stimuli are presented is randomised. Button order is also randomised. Participant has 20 seconds to choose an answer. The target word is presented alongside two non-targets words. One non-target word contains a foil from another stimulus and the other non-target word contains a visually or semantically similar foil to the target. The display set-up records participants answers using the embedded data function and presents a scoreboard at the end of the experiment. Participants can track progress using progress bar below.

Part One contains the encoding trials: For the instructed screenshotting group, participants are presented with 40 images in total and asked to view the image for 20 seconds. Participants are instructed to screenshot some images and not others. Stimuli are presented in two blocks (one containing informative stimuli and the other aesthetic stimuli). Block presentation order is counterbalanced using two spreadsheets. Spreadsheet order 1 contains informative stimuli followed by aesthetic vs. spreadsheet order 2 contains aesthetic followed by informative stimuli. Stimulus presentation is randomised within each block.
For this condition: Gorilla script presents screenshot instructions at random and records which images have had the 'screenshot' button pressed. Participants are permitted to screenshot 10 images in each block. Please note, even if a participant fails to press the screenshot button, the trials will continue as normal.

Part One contains the encoding trials: For the volitional screenshotting group, participants are presented with 40 images in total and asked to view the image for 20 seconds. Participants are enabled to screenshot half of the images when they wish.
For this condition: Gorilla script presents remaining number of screenshots available and records which images have had the 'screenshot' button pressed. Participants are permitted to screenshot 10 images in each block, and the remaining screenshot number will automatically reset once each block is completed. Please note, even if a participant fails to press the screenshot button, the trials will continue as normal.

*Please note: * In the volitional group, participants will be informed how many screenshots they have remaining. For the practice trials, participants are only able to take one screenshot and once the 'screenshot' button has been pressed, it will disappear from the screen in the remaining trial.
