This experiment is about How non-native English speaker (especially people from class B) see or differentiate the politeness strategies in everyday conversation with friends. In everyday conversation, people usually uses different way to make the conversation feel doesn’t rude and make the other people comfortable, especially when asking for help or making a request, Sometimes the way we speak is very direct, while we also try to be more polite or carefull with our words. This study uses Brown and Levinson’s politeness Theory (1987), that explain about four main types of politeness: Bald on record (very direct), Negative politeness (indirect and carefull), Positive politeness (Friendly and warm), and off record (Very indirect). In this study participants will given and read 10 short english sentences, for example “Help me with this” and decide which one of politeness it represent on the sentences. The main goal of the study is to see and learn how non-native english speaker understand the politeness strategies in everyday English conversation. This also can help to improve the communication skills and language learning for people that not a native english speaker.
