AI-generated Real World Object Stimuli Set: Validation Study

This task was used to validate an AI generated stimuli set consisting of 200 everyday object images. The images were created using AI-powered text-to-image generation program Adobe Firefly models 2 and 3 (Adobe, 2024). The purpose of the validation study was to assess the stimuli on the following measures: nameability, realism and familiarity.

Name/rate object

Built with Task Builder 2

In the task, participants are shown a random subset of 80 object images from the stimuli set. For each object in turn, they are asked to type its name (or a description, if they are not able to name the object). On a seprate screen, they are then asked to rate that object in terms of realism and familiarity using 5 point Likert scales presented below the image (1 = not at all realistic/familiar; 5 = extremely realistic/familiar). This process is repeated for all 80 images, and an optional break is given after 40 images.

Note that example images used in the instructions were selected from Brady et al.'s (2008) database, available at https://konklab.fas.harvard.edu/#) - the "Massive Memory" Unique Object Images.
