Learning Phase - spoken and written format

The story task used in our first experiment with adults (Experiment S1), incorporating both written and spoken story presentation (alongside illustrations).

The story task used in the second experiment with adults, using only spoken presentation of the stories (alongside illustrations; paper Experiment 2).

Form Recognition (2AFC)

The form recognition task used in the second experiment with adults (Experiment 2, no orthography). Participants must select which of two spoken pseudowords they heard in the story.

Pic Recognition (2AFC)

The picture-form recognition task used in Experiment 2 (no orthography). Participants must select which of two spoken pseudowords was the name of the object in the story.

Recognition (4AFC)

The recognition task used in Experiment S1 (with orthography). Participants must select which of four written pseudowords was the name of the object in the story (optional auditory presentation). Answer options included:

  • The correct pseudoword for the referent
  • A phonological foil for the learned pseudoword, otherwise correct for the referent
  • Another learned pseudoword (incorrect for reference)
  • A phonological foil for the incorrect option

Stem completion (typed version)

The stem completion task used in Experiment S1 (with orthography). Participants see and hear the start of each pseudoword, and must type the corresponding pseudoword presented in the story.

The stem completion task used in Experiment 2 (no orthography). Participants hear the start of each pseudoword, and must speak the corresponding pseudoword represented in the story.
